Big Ten announces men’s teams from all golf conferences and individual winners

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the men’s All-Conference golf teams and individual winners on Wednesday, as voted on by conference coaches following the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships. Illinois’ Adrien Dumont de Chassart was unanimously named Big Ten Golfer of the Year, Michigan State’s Ashton McCulloch was named Illini Freshman of the Year and Mentor mike small claimed coach of the year honors.
Dumont de Chassart finished in the top five in seven of 11 tournaments this season. The two-time All-Big Ten academic winner capped off his senior season by finishing second in the Big Ten Championships and earning a spot on the All-Championships team. A native of Villers La Ville, Belgium, Dumont de Chassart received the Big Ten’s Les Bolstad award, given to the conference player with the lowest shot average (70.15) during the 2021-22 season. Dumont de Chassart becomes the 13th golfer of the year for Illinois and the first athlete to win the honor in back-to-back seasons since Indiana’s Jorge Campillo in 2009.
McCulloch won the Freshman of the Year award after securing seven top-15 finishes during the 2021-22 campaign. The Kingston, Ont., native capped off his first season with a top-20 finish at the Big Ten Championships, recording a total of 224 (+8) to tie for 17th overall. McCulloch becomes Michigan State’s third freshman of the year and the first since James Piot in 2018.
Small led the Illini to the top 10 in 10 of 11 tournaments this season. Illinois won the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational (September 6), the Boilermaker Invitational (April 10) and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 24) before winning its seventh consecutive Big Ten record on May 1. Illinois capped off the 2022 season with a 284.94 average and a Golfstat national ranking of No. 20. Small won his 12th Coach of the Year award and his eighth in the last 10 years.

The Big Ten also honored 14 Sportsmanship Award winners. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through their sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
