Men’s Tennis: Macalester Cruises Beyond Bethel
Rogers, Minnesota – The Macalester College men’s tennis team played at Rogers Tennis Center tonight for an MIAC matchup against the Bethel Royals. The Scots picked up an 8-1 victory over the Royals. Macalester improves to 8-5 (4-1 MIAC).
At No. 1 in doubles, junior Matthew Sullivan (Tacoma, Wash./Weil) and first year partner Alec Sargent (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century) edged Bethel in an 8-7 win. Senior Alexander Poland (Madison, Wis./Madison West) and Freshman Liam Lynch (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) also had a close battle in doubles No. 3, but took the win 8-6. The Royals won second overall in doubles.
After winning the first set 6-3 in singles No. 1, Sargent was forced into a third set where he won 1-0. At No. 2 in singles, it was senior Karsten Knutsen (Minneapolis, Minn./Riverfield Country Day (Okla.) who came back from a set down to win set two 6-3, and set three 1-0. Freshman Jordan Doi (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) also played a three-set singles match No. 3, winning 6-4, 1-6, 1-0. Sullivan had a close battle in the first set, but won 7-5, then took a 6-2 win in the second set to win the fourth singles. Junior Anton Korolev (Moscow, Russia/Weil) battled to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in singles No. 5, while Poland won two sets 6-1 to claim victory in singles No. 6.
The Scots’ next game is scheduled for Thursday, April 21 at 5 p.m. Macalester will host Hamline.
