Military commissions media invitation announced for the United States against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed et al. Pre-trial hearing
The Department of Defense and the Office of Military Commissions (OMC) invite the media to cover the pre-trial proceedings in United States v. Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarek Bin ‘Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, Ramzi Bin al Shibh, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi, scheduled for June 27 through July 22, 2022. Specific coverage windows are identified below based on flight availability. Media wishing to cover this hearing from the Expeditionary Legal Complex located at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) in Cuba should complete the online travel request form to begin the approval process.
Deadline: All requests must be received by noon EDT Friday, April 22.
Registration note: Multiple applicants from the same organization must register separately via the online travel request form. Then, complete all the requested information. Due to a limited number of seats on board the flight and limited accommodation at the NSGB, selection is not guaranteed.
Qualified media will travel to the NSGB on an Army-chartered aircraft from Joint Base Andrews (JBA), located near Washington, DC, Maryland. Members of the media should be prepared to make adequate travel arrangements to get to JBA for their respective flight. The cost of the military charter flight is $800.

- SAT July 2 – JBA to NSGB and NSGB to JBA
- SAT July 9 – JBA to NSGB and NSGB to JBA

Important: All media should ensure that their passports and visas, if applicable, are current and eligible to enter and exit the United States. Media should be prepared to complete additional documents and provide passport information after completing the online registration form.
The primary focus of this media invitation is courtroom reporting. Photography or other multimedia devices are not permitted in the courtroom. You may have time to acquire video/still photos outside of the Legal Expeditionary Complex, as well as the ability to do live action shooting if needed. Tours of detention centers are not available. Please keep this in mind when considering your coverage for your respective outlet.
Requests to report on Guantanamo Bay topics beyond the scope of the military commission system will be directed to the respective public affairs office responsible for that area. WTO PA staff will provide applicable contact details prior to travel for coordination if timing permits.
Media who can provide proof that they are fully vaccinated (after 14 days from receiving the full COVID-19 vaccination from a DoD-approved vaccination) will be considered to travel on the OMC charter flight. Media that are not fully vaccinated may not see the NSGB audience. Selected media will also be required to provide printed proof of a negative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) COVID-19 viral test within 72 hours of charter flight departure.
Once on the NSGB, members of the media may be subject to surveillance testing and will adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements imposed by the Commandant of the NSGB, Office of the Secretary of Defense for Business public authorities or the military judge.

Additional viewing is available to media via closed-circuit television (CCTV) from a media work center at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Regular COVID-19 mitigation protocols, such as mask-wearing and social distancing, apply at all locations, although media viewing from Fort Meade is not subject to the testing requirements of the COVID-19.
