People gather at a paranormal event in Cape Girardeau this weekend
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – People came to the first-ever Midwest Conference of the Unknown in Cape Girardeau this weekend.
This event features speakers, vendor booths, panel discussions and more – all paranormal and unexplained themed.
“It’s a gathering of people who are interested in unexplained phenomena,” Cape Events director Ken Murphy said. “Everything from the alien UFO phenomenon to the ghost hunter that seems to be captivating everyone these days. And, again, my favorite, cryptids, monsters, bigfoots.
This event is unique in the Cape Girardeau area where people can meet and chat with writers, researchers, artists and more.
“There are a lot of areas in the country that have these stories and where research is important,” Murphy said. “Cap Girardeau, also a lot since 1941.”
Author Breanna Bright is from Cape Girardeau. She said it was great to share local stories with people.
“Cap has a surprising amount of paranormal activity,” Bright said. “We have a lot of haunted buildings, cryptids, you’ve heard of the Big Muddy Monster in Murphysboro, Messiah in the Mississippi River. So, we definitely have our own set of fun spookies in the area.
Muphy said the event was due to growing interest in the area.
“Events like these are very human, very social,” Murphy said. “So you want to come and meet the person you listened to on the podcast. You want to meet the person who wrote the book you read and enjoyed, and the scholars who have published in magazines, journals, and published books over the decades. This is the place to come and meet them.
“Even if you don’t really believe in that stuff, it’s just fun,” Bright said. “It’s just fun to talk and look at the evidence and read the books and see all the neat art that people have made. It’s just a good time.
The event continues Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Drury Conference Center in Cape Girardeau.
