Philadelphia officer shoots 2 gunmen after hearing gunshots at West Mount Airy
The two men, aged 18 and 23, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No police were injured in the incident, police said.
Officers recovered two weapons, a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic handgun, which investigators photographed as evidence.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers were in the 300 block of Glen Echo Road for a disruption call.
They were standing on a porch filing the complaint, when police said officers heard gunshots.
Officers then saw two men walking down the street.
Police said one of the men was holding a semi-automatic rifle and the other a semi-automatic handgun. Police said the two were firing shots.
The officers believed the men were shooting at them; one of the officers opened fire.
“One of at least three officers from the 14th arrondissement who were on the porch to file the complaint repeatedly fired his gun in the direction of these two individuals, fearing that they would fire in their direction,” said Sgt. . Eric Gripp.
One of the men was grazed in the face, the other was shot in the leg.
Both were taken to hospital in stable condition.
“It’s very early in this investigation. We don’t know exactly what was the genesis of it all; at this time, we are very lucky that the police officers were not injured, and the individuals, who carried the both of the weapons and who are also being held at this time, we are grateful that their injuries weren’t worse, ”Gripp said.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw intervened at the scene after the shooting.
