Spring 2023 men’s fashion trend: Americana – WWD
Hedi Slimane’s love of American youth culture has been a benchmark for his menswear designs over the years, and his latest Spring 2023 menswear collection – steeped in rock ‘n’ roll – n was no exception.
American flag prints in blazers, artfully crafted faded jeans, oversized leather outerwear adorned with allover studs, fringe and sequins, along with some retro Elvis-worthy tuxedos, were among the examples the coolest of this American rocker style, with a touch of grunge that Slimane is known for.
For the Dsquared2 collection, the Americana trend was inspired by surfing. “There are enough bulls in the world, enough hate. We want to be as positive as possible, relaxed and more connected,” Dsquared2 coder Dan Caten said of his menswear collection backstage after their show. That laid-back, laid-back attitude translated into a colorful collection centered around American surf culture, with inventive layering, clashing floral prints, a few retro ’70s references, and an overall laid-back vibe.
Junya Watanabe also opted for Americana: “A serial collaborator with a passion for American workwear brands like Levi’s, Brooks Brothers and Carhartt, Junya Watanabe has further expanded his roster of dance partners for Spring 2023 with the cream of the cream of American pop artists,” wrote international editor Miles Socha of his Junya Watanabe spring collection review. Desperate women from Roy Lichtenstein’s comic strip, Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe”, Keith Haring’s doodles and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s crowns and skull motifs were some of the embellishment details used throughout. throughout the collection. Consumer goods logos from Netflix, Coca-Cola and Honda were also present to reinforce the American vibe of the offering.
Mike Amiri, one of many American designers who roamed Paris Fashion Week, also brought the Americana trend to the forefront of his spring collection. “Amiri draws a lot of inspiration from the archives of classic Americana that he keeps,” wrote Samantha Conti in her review of the Amiri spring collection.
The range included great American sportswear, such as ultralight suits, all paired with sneakers, silky basketball shorts and fitted baseball shirts. A range of handcrafted patchwork varsity jackets, leather tops punched to look like athletic mesh and painterly tie-dye sweaters put a sophisticated spin on the offering, while elevating the Americana trend to new heights.
Reese Cooper’s collaboration with Levi’s, designer Kenzo Nigo’s take on American college dress codes, and Rhude’s Rhuigi Villaseñor’s subversive take on preppy help give depth to the American trend.
