USD and SDSU men renew rivalry at Brookings on Saturday
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – It’s State-U this weekend as rivals SDSU and USD meet in men’s and women’s basketball. On the men’s side, SDSU are looking to maintain their perfect start to the Summit League, while USD look to take out rivals for the 3rd time in the last four meetings.
USD and SDSU started the conference game in opposite directions. The Jacks come on Saturday 3-0 in the Summit League and come off a road victory over NDSU.
“I started the second half really really well, then I had a little dry spell, but I never panicked. We were able to finish, obviously Dougie was great, but it’s time to move on. something else, ”said SDSU head coach Eric Henderson.
The USD is 0-2 in the league and then their next two games have been called off due to COVID-19 protocols. Monday’s practice was the first time the Coyotes could be together in 10 days.
“They were happy to be back in the gym and it was great to see everyone and the team to feel some normalcy. But from a fitness standpoint, we’re a long way from it, ”said USD head coach Todd Lee.
The Coyotes will need to prepare quickly for a powerful Jackrabbit offense that leads the country in 3-point field goal percentage.
“We’ll have to defend really well, but we’ll have to score basketball because they can run because of their explosive. They’ve got everyone back from the team last year, they haven’t lost anyone, ”said Lee.
SDSU will have to adapt to a new Coyote team compared to last season.
“Instead of being maybe a little more perimeter oriented with AJ and Stan, they’re really trying to make the paint their own and make it very, very hard for you to score in the paint and try to win on the line. free throws, ”said Henderson. .
You can throw records out the window on Saturday, as both teams expect a battle inside Frost Arena.
“They’re not going to come here scared. They will arrive confident, they will be hungry and they will be connected. We know it’s going to be a big challenge, but we’re also very excited for it, ”said Henderson.
Saturday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 a.m. at Brookings.
